"What I learned as an apprentice, both at college and on the job, I still use every day."

In my role, I’m responsible for installing a variety of systems in British embassies around the world. It means I do a lot of overseas travel, something I really enjoy. The great thing about my apprenticeship was that I got to spend time with the team I’m now part of, so I was fully aware of what was involved and what to expect when I became qualified. What I learned as an apprentice, both at college and on the job, I still use every day. The big difference is that I’ve got a lot more responsibility now, with higher expectations of me.

I joined my apprenticeship back in 2016 after completing my GCSEs. I hadn’t studied Engineering, but that didn’t matter at all. You start by gaining qualifications at college, before moving around the organisation to spend time with different teams. So not only do you build up any specialist knowledge you need, you get a proper sense of what the working environment is like here. And I’d sum that up in one word: supportive.

"I truly believe that an apprenticeship is a brilliant way to start your career in FCDO Services."

For anyone just starting on their apprenticeship journey, I’d say that as long as you’ve got a good work ethic and you’re willing to learn, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Take every opportunity that you can; work hard and be proactive. And remember, you’ll be joining an organisation with a massive range of jobs all over the world. So I truly believe that an apprenticeship is a brilliant way to start your career in FCDO Services."
